Five new restaurants joined the elite Michelin Guide (Spain & Portugal edition) in 2023, with the country now boasting 45 Michelin stars.

The announcement was made on Tuesday night at Palácio de Congressos El Greco, in Toledo, Spain.

The new Michelin-starred restaurants are all located in Lisbon (Encanto, Kabuki Lisboa and Kanazawa) and Porto (Euskalduna Studio and Le Monument).

In the Algarve, Ocean (Porches) and Vila Joya (Albufeira) will continue to boast two-star status, while Vistas (Vila Nova de Cacela), Vista (Portimão), Bon Bon (Carvoeiro), Gusto by Heinz Beck (Almancil), Al Sud Palmares (Lagos) and A Ver Tavira (Tavira) have all maintained their single star.

Meanwhile, Portugal also received three Green Stars – Il Gallo d’Oro (Funchal); Mesa de Lemos (Passos de Silgueiros) and Esporão (Reguengos de Monsaraz) – which are awarded to restaurants “at the forefront of the industry when it comes to their sustainable practices”.

The Bib Gourmand distinction – which recognises restaurants that serve “good food at moderate prices – was attributed to 38 restaurants in Portugal, including seven newcomers: Carnal (Lisbon), Oficio (Lisbon), Zunzum Gastrobar (Lisbon), Gruta (Porto), Semea by Euskalduna (Porto), À Mesa (Tavira) and Rio by Paulo André (Vila do Conde).

Apart from À Mesa, the Algarve retained its three Big Gourmands from last year: O Marinheiro (Albufeira), CHECK-in Faro (Faro), and Avenida (Lagos).
