Portugal’s Clean Air and Quality of Life Attract Rising Interest from the UK and Ireland

January 16, 2026

As awareness grows around urban air quality and lifestyle pressures in major cities, Portugal continues to attract increasing interest as a European destination offering cleaner air, a healthier environment and a more balanced pace of life. Cities such as Funchal on the Portuguese island of Madeira have become particular points of focus for prospective movers seeking improved air quality and overall wellbeing.

Current air-quality data show that Funchal typically records PM2.5 levels of approximately 4–8 µg/m³, placing it firmly within the “good” air-quality category. By comparison, air quality across many larger urban centres in the UK and Ireland remains more challenging. In London, long-term PM2.5 levels across major boroughs are generally within the range of 14–15.7 µg/m³. In Dublin, recent PM2.5 readings have been reported at around 10.6 µg/m³.

These figures demonstrate a clear difference in environmental conditions between Portugal’s cleaner coastal cities and the major urban areas in the UK and Ireland. For individuals and families considering relocation, this distinction is significant. Lower long-term exposure to PM2.5 is associated with reduced risks of respiratory and cardiovascular conditions and improved overall health outcomes.

To support those exploring life in Portugal, the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce will soon host two Moving to Portugal Shows, with events taking place in London on 26 March 2026 and another in Dublin on 30 April 2026. These free, one-day events provide practical guidance on all aspects of relocation, including visas, property, taxation and moving logistics. Attendees will also be able to engage directly with experts, attend panel discussions focused on lifestyle and health, and compare regional living options across Portugal.

“As more people prioritise long-term wellbeing and quality of life, factors such as air quality and lifestyle are becoming just as important as price or proximity,” said Christina Hippisley, General Manager of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce. “Portuguese cities such as Funchal demonstrate what is possible through clean air, natural surroundings and a high standard of living.”

“Whether someone is actively planning a move or simply beginning to explore their options, our Shows in London and Dublin are designed to provide clear, reliable information in one place,” Christina added.

Both events are free to attend, although advance registration is required. Further information and registration details are available at
