The Moving to Portugal Shows & Seminars are organised by the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in the UK. We launched the first show in 2017 and since then over 7,000 visitors have attended the events, which we run regularly throughout the year in London and around the UK.
Portugal has always been a very popular destination for British tourists – over 2 million Brits visit Portugal every year. And many of these visitors fall in love with Portugal and decide to move there permanently for business or lifestyle reasons – at the end of 2021 there were over 40,000 British people officially resident in Portugal, making them Portugal’s second largest group of foreign residents (after the Brazilians).
And thanks to the long established trading relationship between the UK and Portugal, dating back over 650 years, many British business people are also looking for suitable investment opportunities in Portugal.
Since 2017, the Chamber has developed a particular niche in this area, matching British movers with their dream lifestyle in Portugal, and introducing British investors to opportunities in Portugal.
Our next Show and Seminar will take place on 14th March 2024 in London – click here to learn more and to register to attend.
In addition to our live events, we also now do regular webinars on various Moving to Portugal topics, which are stored in our online library.
Since the Brexit referendum in 2016, the Chamber has noticed a growing demand from the British public for more information about Portugal’s Non Habitual Resident (NHR) tax regime, which is very attractive to those planning to retire abroad to Portugal or who wish to move there to restructure their businesses and working lives. UK nationals can currently benefit from these very favourable NHR tax rules during their first ten years in Portugal.
For those who wish to move permanently to Portugal, residency visas (D7) and working visas are also easy to apply for.
However, now that the UK is no longer in Europe and is a ‘third country’, there are new restrictions on the amount of time British residents can spend in Portugal (no more than 90 days in any 180-day period). British residents who wish to spend more time than that in Portugal can now consider applying for Portugal’s Golden Visa programme, which currently allows them the freedom to visit Portugal and the rest of Europe at will despite being resident for tax purposes outside Portugal/Europe.
